New York University’s Expository Writing Program (EWP) invites applications for the position of Director of Faculty Development to start September 1, 2019, pending budgetary and administrative approval. This is a Continuing Contract Faculty position at the rank of Clinical Associate Professor. Initial appointment will be for a three-year term with the possibility of renewal for subsequent multi-year terms. Promotion in rank is typically considered after at least five years.
The Expository Writing Program, an independent academic unit housed in the College of Arts and Science (CAS) provides writing instruction and support for CAS and other NYU schools. The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty of over 100 writers and scholars, and serve as part of the EWP leadership team, providing guidance and supervision for the Program’s offerings and quality of instruction.
The Director of Faculty Development leads the Program’s extensive Faculty Development component, including hiring, orientation, and mentoring of new faculty; ongoing development for experienced faculty; and program and curricular assessment, including assessment of student learning. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Leading orientation and mentoring for new faculty, including workshops in May and August, as well as over the course of the fall semester;
- Supervising two teams: of Faculty Mentors, who work with faculty new to the Program; and of Assistant Directors, who provide leadership for the Program’s school-specific course offerings;
- Designing and implementing structures to ensure pedagogical quality and curricular consistency throughout the Program, including assessment of student learning in relation to course and Program learning outcomes; and
- Working with the EWP leadership team, Faculty Development Committee, and Assistant Directors to design and implement ongoing Faculty Development workshops and other opportunities throughout the year.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of leadership in first-year writing programs and experience in building program initiatives, as well as excellence in teaching writing. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience mentoring new faculty, supervising a diverse and experienced continuing faculty, and designing student learning and program assessments. A PhD is preferred, although candidates with an EdD, MFA, or other appropriate terminal degree are encouraged to apply.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applications received by December 1, 2018 will receive first consideration. To apply, submit a cover letter that reflects on relevant experience; a statement of your teaching philosophy that includes discussion of your approach to faculty development and program leadership; a cv; and three letters of recommendation. As diversity is an important part of the NYU mission, in the statement of teaching philosophy, we ask you to provide a brief paragraph telling us how diversity figures into your past and present teaching, research, community engagement, and/or life experience, as well as how you would bring issues of diversity to bear on the teaching and programming of NYU's Expository Writing Program.
