Position Vacancy Notice

Academic Counselor (multiple positions available)

Posting date: December 18, 2023

Salary Grade: 113

THE OPPORTUNITY:

This is an exciting time to be a part of the HCCC community. The College recently launched its 2021-24 Strategic Plan, the culmination of which will align with the College's 50th anniversary in 2024. The College was recognized by the Association of Community College Trustees as the recipient of the 2021 ACCT Northeast Region Equity Award. HCCC has recently been named one of 101 recipients, 1 of only 7 community colleges to be distinguished for the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. HCCC's Culinary Arts Institute was ranked as the #6 Culinary Arts program in the United States by Best Choice Schools. Most recently, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) selected HCCC as one of twenty-four colleges nationwide to be named a "2022 Most Promising Place to Work in Community Colleges."

Department/Division Introduction

The Advisement Department is looking for a full-time Academic Counselor for the Advisement Department, reporting to the Senior Assistant Director of Advisement. Academic Counselors promote student success in support of and in accordance with the College's mission statement, program policies and procedures, and established goals and objectives of the Student Affairs Division.

This position may be based at either the North Hudson Campus in Union City, or the Journal Square Campus in Jersey City and travel between campuses may be required. While the Office of Advisement operates during traditional business hours, staff may be asked to support occasional College-wide evening or weekend events.

What you would be doing in this role:
  • Provide students with academic advising, major exploration, transfer opportunities, educational programming, and course registration assistance.
  • Assist incoming students with transition to the College by engaging in conversations about time management, study skills and test taking strategies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, data, and reports across various platforms to contribute toward the College's Student Success Plan.
  • Integrate data-informed decision-making and evidence-based practices into daily work.
  • Provide resources, referrals, and information to assist students in navigating the college.
  • Create and maintain cross-campus relationships to provide referrals and opportunities for engagement.
  • Participate in college committees and events to increase visibility for the program, gain knowledge, and build partnerships across the College.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by departmental leadership.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Clear Communication Style: Superior verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Master's degree: Required in Counseling, Higher Education, Social Work, Student Affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience: Open to various levels of experience in higher education but working with a culturally and socioeconomically diverse student population is highly desirable. Hudson County Community College supports a diverse and traditionally underrepresented student population, and we consider this an important element of the work we do at the College.
  • Technology Skills: Proficient in various computer software programs and SaaS including Microsoft Office suite, Airtable, Mongoose, Calendly, Ellucian-Colleague or similar higher education platforms.
  • Relational skills: Relationship building is a central part of the role, so strong interpersonal and active listening skills are essential. It is important that you balance having a supportive ear with the ability to identify needs, so students are able to realize their personal and educational goals.
  • Creativity: A penchant for out of the box thinking and creative problem-solving will be an asset in this role.
  • Additional Skills: Collaboration, flexibility, innovation, strategic thinking, and a positive attitude.
What will set you apart as a candidate:

  • Bi-lingual ability: Our College has a linguistically diverse student population, so while not required, for this position the ability to read and write in Spanish, or another language, is preferred.

For applying, we ask that you answer the following questions by submitting and uploading on a word document or pdf.
  • Why do you want to work with us at HCCC?
  • How does your past work/ educational experience make you a great candidate for this job?
  • Tell us about a time you solved a problem in the workplace. We're especially excited to know if you used technology to do it, but are open to any creative solutions!
